1.1 This specification covers all registered2 aluminum-alloy castings, produced by Squeeze Casting, and the Semi-Solid Thixocast and Rheocast casting processes, designated as shown in Table 1.
1.2 This specification is for aluminum-alloy squeeze castings, and semi-solid Thixocast and Rheocast castings used in general purpose applications. It may not address the mechanical properties, integrity testing, and verification required for highly loaded or safety critical applications.
1.3 It is recommended this specification be used to detail the responsibilities of the purchaser and producer for quality assurance tests, testing methods, and process control requirements for nonregistered aluminum alloys. The chemical composition limits, heat treatment process, and required mechanical properties shall be agreed upon by the purchaser and the producer.
1.4 Alloy and temper designations are in accordance with ANSI H35.1/H35.1 (M).
1.5 Unless the order specifies the “M” specification designation, the material shall be furnished to the inch-pound units.
1.6 For acceptance criteria for inclusion of new aluminum and aluminum alloys and their properties in this specification, see Annex A1 and Annex A2.
1.7 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated are not necessarily equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance to the standard, each system shall be used independently from each other and the values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.9 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
