DESCRIPTION

1.1 This practice applies to the classification, design, manufacture, construction, auditing, major modification, and operation of surf basins.

1.1.1 Surf basins subject to this practice incorporate wave generating equipment and a constructed body of water to produce moving waves that (1) shoal and break progressively towards shallow water and (2) have characteristics suitable for surfing in operational modes ranging from recreation to sport.

1.1.2 In addition to the wave-generating equipment and the body of water, this standard includes requirements related to patron (surfers and spectators) ingress and egress, employee access, and safety equipment and procedures.

1.2 A variety of wave generating mechanisms are subject to this practice.

1.3 This practice does not apply to:

1.3.1 Amusement wave swimming pools or action rivers that produce non-surfable waves, such as: whitewater bores and waterpark diamond-patterned wave pools intended for free swimming, inner-tube floating and body-bobbing.

1.3.2 Non-surfing operational zones in mixed-use facilities when used by a non-surfing participant in the same basin at the same or separate times.

1.3.3 Design, construction, and maintenance of equipment intended for other non-surfing purposes, even if located in the surf basin facility.

1.3.4 Settings that utilize naturally generated sources for waves, whether the basin containing the body of water is engineered or not.

1.3.5 Systems that generate surfable stationary waves, such as those within the scope of Practice F3133.

1.4 The design portions of this practice are not intended to apply to pre-existing designs constructed or manufactured before the effective date of publication of this practice. This exclusion does not apply to operational requirements.

1.5 This practice includes an annex (mandatory), which provides additional information (for example, rationale, background, interpretations, drawings, commentary, and so forth) to improve the user’s understanding and application of the criteria presented in this practice. The annex information shall be interpreted as mandatory design criteria.

1.6 This practice includes an appendix (non-mandatory), which provides additional information (for example, rationale, background, interpretations, drawings, commentary, and so forth) to improve the user’s understanding and application of the criteria presented in this practice.
