BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025 Electrical Relays Standard

BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025: Electrical Relays - Tests and Measurements in Corrosive Atmospheres

Introducing the BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025, a comprehensive standard that sets the benchmark for testing and measuring electrical relays in environments affected by corrosive atmospheres, particularly those impacted by sulfur. This standard is an essential resource for professionals in the electrical engineering field, ensuring that electrical relays are reliable and efficient even in challenging conditions.

Key Features of the Standard

  • Standard Number: BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025
  • Pages: 14
  • Release Date: January 28, 2025
  • ISBN: 978 0 539 20399 8
  • Status: Standard

Why This Standard is Essential

Electrical relays are critical components in a wide range of applications, from industrial machinery to consumer electronics. They play a vital role in controlling circuits by opening and closing contacts in response to electrical signals. However, in environments where sulfur and other corrosive elements are present, the performance and longevity of these relays can be severely compromised. The BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025 standard provides a detailed framework for testing and measuring the resilience of electrical relays in such conditions, ensuring they meet the highest standards of reliability and safety.

Comprehensive Testing and Measurement Protocols

This standard outlines rigorous testing and measurement protocols that are designed to simulate real-world conditions where sulfur-induced corrosion is a concern. By adhering to these protocols, manufacturers and engineers can ensure that their products are capable of withstanding harsh environments, thereby reducing the risk of failure and extending the lifespan of the relays.

Benefits of Compliance

Compliance with the BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025 standard offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Reliability: Products that meet this standard are proven to perform reliably in corrosive environments, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Increased Safety: By ensuring that relays function correctly under adverse conditions, the standard helps prevent electrical failures that could lead to safety hazards.
  • Market Advantage: Products that comply with recognized standards are more likely to be trusted by consumers and industry professionals, providing a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Who Should Use This Standard?

The BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025 standard is indispensable for:

  • Manufacturers: Ensuring that their products meet international standards for quality and reliability.
  • Engineers and Designers: Developing and testing products that are intended for use in corrosive environments.
  • Quality Assurance Professionals: Verifying that products comply with industry standards and regulations.
  • Regulatory Bodies: Setting benchmarks for safety and performance in the electrical industry.

Conclusion

The BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025 standard is a vital tool for anyone involved in the design, manufacture, or testing of electrical relays. By providing a clear and comprehensive framework for testing in corrosive atmospheres, it ensures that products are safe, reliable, and fit for purpose. Whether you are a manufacturer looking to certify your products, an engineer designing for challenging environments, or a quality assurance professional ensuring compliance, this standard is an essential resource.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025

This standard BS EN IEC 63522-13:2025 Electrical relays. Tests and measurements is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 29.120.70 Relays
IEC 63522-13:2024 is used for testing electromechanical elementary relays (electromechanical relays, reed relays, reed contacts, reed switches and technology combinations of these) and for evaluating their ability to perform under expected conditions of transportation, storage and all aspects of operational use. This document defines a standard test method to simulate impacts of sulfuric atmospheres to relays. The test conditions simulate an artificial situation and allow a performance comparison for usability of the devices under test (DUT) with regard to known and existing switching solutions. The test is a static test without actual operation of the DUT to simulate a worst-case scenario for corrosion, since corrosion increases over time. The corrosion layer can potentially create contact sticking, increase resistance or other undesired effects in the relay. Those aspects can be affected by DUT actuations during the test, which can destroy the corrosion layers or hide relevant long-term effects. In addition to polluted atmospheres, the suitability of the DUT for use and/or storage in corrosive atmospheres can be assessed in a salt-laden atmosphere as described in IEC 63522-44.
