Why BS EN ISO 11986:2026 is Essential

Contact lenses are a critical component of modern eye care, offering millions of people around the world the convenience and comfort of vision correction without the need for glasses. However, the interaction between contact lenses and the preservatives used in their care products is a complex process that can affect both the efficacy and safety of these products.

The BS EN ISO 11986:2026 standard provides a comprehensive methodology for assessing how contact lenses absorb and release preservatives. This is crucial for ensuring that lenses remain safe and comfortable for wearers, while also maintaining their intended corrective properties.

Benefits of Understanding Preservative Uptake and Release

  • Enhanced Safety: By understanding how preservatives interact with contact lenses, manufacturers can design products that minimize potential adverse reactions, ensuring a safer experience for users.
  • Improved Comfort: Proper management of preservative uptake and release can lead to more comfortable lenses, reducing irritation and dryness for the wearer.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to the guidelines set out in this standard helps manufacturers meet regulatory requirements, facilitating smoother market entry and acceptance.
  • Product Innovation: With a clear understanding of preservative dynamics, companies can innovate and develop new products that offer superior performance and user satisfaction.

Who Should Use This Standard?

DESCRIPTION

BS EN ISO 11986:2026

This standard BS EN ISO 11986:2026 Ophthalmic optics. Contact lenses and contact lens care products. Determination of preservative uptake and release is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 11.040.70 Ophthalmic equipment
This document provides general procedures for the selection of methods, preparation of samples, and the conduct of testing for the uptake and release of preservatives from contact lenses. Preservative uptake and release testing is not intended as a routine test of production contact lenses or contact lens care products nor are testing results meant to establish finished goods specifications in any way. Such testing is carried out when developing new contact lens materials and/or contact lens care products. NOTE 1        Due to the manifest difficulties of reproducibility when coating contact lenses with mineral and organic deposits encountered during lens wear, these methods are only applicable to new and unused contact lenses. NOTE 2        Preservative depletion by a contact lens in the limited volume of a lens case could compromise disinfection performance. This document does not measure disinfection performance.
