DESCRIPTION
IEEE 2890-2025
This recommended practice details the process by which the provenance of Indigenous Peoples’ data should be described and recorded. This recommended practice outlines the core parameters for providing and digitally embedding the provenance of Indigenous Peoples’ data. This recommended practice supports appropriate disclosure of Indigenous Peoples’ relationships and/or links to data, as well as the long-term identification of Indigenous Peoples’ data for future use, and connects data to people and place, and when appropriate, facilitates future benefit sharing. The purpose of this recommended practice is to describe what provenance of Indigenous Peoples’ data includes; how the recommended practice should be operationalized; when, where, and how to disclose the provenance information and in what format; as well as what, if any, potential limitations exist for recognizing the provenance of Indigenous Peoples’ data. This recommended practice aims to facilitate the interoperability of provenance fields across various information platforms and databases and to support the disclosure and use of Indigenous Peoples’ data.
New IEEE Standard - Active. A common set of parameters for the provenance of Indigenous Peoples’ data is established in this recommended practice. This recommended practice supports the appropriate disclosure of Indigenous Peoples’ relationships and/or links to all data. The provenance of Indigenous Peoples’ data includes information that facilitates Indigenous Peoples’ governance, decision-making, participation, collaboration, and engagement in, and for, current and future uses of Indigenous Peoples’ data.
