This document specifies the procedure to determine the tensile adhesive strength and/or the coating strength of a thermal sprayed coating under tension load in the direction normal to the surface of the coating by applying a tensile test. Using this method comparability of the test results is ensured. The test is intended to determine the tensile adhesive strength between the spray coating and the parent metal or between the bond and top coat and/or of the cohesive strength of the concerned coat of the coating system. This test is sufficient to compare coatings manufactured using same or similar spray materials and processes with each other. The tensile adhesive strength test is not intended to provide set values for calculation purposes of loadings. The test is used to assess the effects of the preparation of the part s surface to be coated, the spraying conditions, and the process parameter on the adhesive strength of thermal spray coatings or to monitor the constancy of the manufacture and the spray works. In that way a decisive contribution can be made to process and quality assurance of production. NOTE This tensile test can be applied for very thin coatings and can minimise infiltration also for spray coatings containing a required porosity by using an appropriate foil adhesive (for further instructions see 6.5.3). This tensile test is inappropriate applying the determination of the tensile adhesive strength of fused spray coatings made of self-fluxing alloys due to the high strength values.
