DESCRIPTION

BS EN 17001:2018

This standard BS EN 17001:2018 Thermal spraying. Components with thermally sprayed coatings. Coating specification is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 25.220.20 Surface treatment
This European standard defines the requirements to be specified in the coating specification for a thermally sprayed coating. It applies to components and workpieces made of metallic or non-metallic materials that are to be partially or completely coated with thermally sprayed coatings. The coating can be made of metals, metal ceramics, oxide ceramics or plastics. Additional requirements for the coating manufacturer that are not coating-specific are intended to be included by defining the technical supply conditions according to EN ISO 12670. The requirements defined in this standard are intended to be met by a component-related thermal spray procedure specification (TSPS) prepared by the coating manufacturer. The thermal spray procedure specification is intended to be documented and component-related to ensure traceability. For details, see FprEN 17002. Proof that the requirements of the coating specification are met by the application of the thermal spray procedure specification can be provided by performing a component-related procedure qualification according to EN 15648. If specific coating requirements cannot be specified by the customer, they are intended to be agreed with the contractor on the basis of the requirements for the sprayed coating - e.g. against fretting wear at high temperatures - and on the basis of the contractor's past experience.

This standard is essential for professionals in industries where thermal spraying is a critical process, ensuring that coatings meet the necessary quality and performance criteria.

What is Thermal Spraying?

Thermal spraying is a versatile coating process used to apply materials onto surfaces to enhance their properties, such as wear resistance, corrosion protection, or thermal insulation. This process involves the projection of molten or semi-molten materials onto a substrate, forming a coating that adheres to the surface.

Importance of BS EN 17001:2018

The BS EN 17001:2018 standard plays a crucial role in ensuring that thermally sprayed coatings are applied correctly and consistently. It provides detailed specifications that help manufacturers and engineers achieve optimal coating performance, which is vital for the longevity and reliability of the coated components.

Key Features of the Standard

  • Comprehensive Guidelines: The standard offers detailed instructions on the preparation, application, and testing of thermally sprayed coatings.
  • Quality Assurance: It includes criteria for assessing the quality of coatings, ensuring they meet industry standards and customer expectations.
  • Performance Criteria: The standard outlines the performance requirements for coatings, including adhesion, thickness, and surface finish.
  • Material Specifications: It provides specifications for the materials used in thermal spraying, ensuring compatibility and effectiveness.
